about burke county
Burke County Airport is located in a diverse, thriving agricultural region with a supportive political climate and a strong focus on the future. Home to the highest output nuclear reactor in the US, Plant Vogtle - the future looks bright for an airport poised to leverage its ongoing improvements to serve as a vital economic development engine for the County and all of its communities.
our Expertise
Since May 2020, MaesAwyr has been serving as the prime consultant for the Burke County Airport. Upon selection, our team promptly assessed the existing conditions, reviewed the County's airport goals, and assisted in formulating their airport's vision. We completed a comprehensive capital improvement program to identify safety and infrastructure requirements, developing a creative triage plan for obstruction removal, infrastructure repair, and facility development.
Starting in 2016, MaesAwyr has been providing continuous support for the realization of the Airport Layout Plan (ALP) and, equally important, reviewing and developing the recurrent 5-year capital improvement program (CIP) to align with the County's preferred development trajectory.
Since collaborating with the Airport, numerous projects have been successfully completed. These include land acquisition that enabled the removal of obstructions from the approach, with future plans for installing an AWOS system. During this process, we also addressed obstructions on adjacent properties not owned by the airport through easement agreements. Additionally, in the summer of 2023, the airport completed two phases of fencing, enhancing safety and security by outlining the airport's property boundaries. A third phase to fully enclose the airport perimeter is scheduled for the coming years.
The airport undertook an airport compliance and business planning project to establish policies for through-the-fence agreements, non-aeronautical land use, and rates and charges development. This initiative supported the development of waiting lists and through-the-fence agreements while helping the airport establish appropriate market rates for hangar rentals.
Building on this planning effort, the airport completed a major development project in February 2025, which included the construction of two 10-unit T-hangars and three corporate hangars. The project also involved the construction of hangar taxilanes, the expansion of airport parking facilities, the installation of a new airport beacon, and the relocation of existing vault equipment. Additionally, it addressed a wetland near the runway, mitigating a wildlife-related safety hazard.
